Gmail inbox not being updated when message 'archived' or deleted in MailMate

Reported by Jon Phipps | February 12th, 2014 @ 08:13 PM

v1.72 (4013)

I have tried to set the [Gmail]/All Mail mailbox to Mailbox Type: 'Archive' but it doesn't seem to stick. The primary symptom of the problem is that a message that I view in Inbox and archive using the Archive button (or delete) is removed from the Inbox in MailMate, is 'moved' to the correct [Gmail]/All Mail or [Gmail]/Trash folder in MailMate but isn't synced back to Gmail. It may be related to the fact that the [Gmail]/All Mail and [Gmail]/Trash folders constantly show as active and this may be related to the size of the mailboxes: 192,702 messages in All Mail and 9,711 in Trash, 2,899 in Inbox. The Activity window shows continuous activity as well.

Some users have reported issues with Gmail with large mailboxes after I did some “All Mail” related changes. I suspect that part of the reason is that Google has a slow implementation of the so-called CONDSTORE extension, but this is just speculation (it could be a MailMate bug instead). You can quit MailMate and try to disable it like this:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmEnableIMAPCondstore -bool NO

(I really should do some experiments with Gmail/MailMate/CONDSTORE.)

Let me know whether or not the above makes a difference.

Didn't seem to make a difference. After changing that, I seem to be getting more random crashes (possibly unrelated). And now I'm getting this:

'MailMate encountered the following error: “Time limit (30s) reached while trying to read data (imap.gmail.com)”. Mailbox: “[Gmail]/All Mail”.' ...and offers to 'Cancel Flag Changes'

So, MailMate has been continuously downloading for nearly 3 days (I'm on a 2mb/sec DSL) at the rate of about 175kB/s and my ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/IMAP/jonphipps@imap.gmail.com folder is about 9.5GB -- Gmail reports that I have used 9.14GB of 15GB on their server, at least .8GB of which is attachments -- so maybe it's almost done. I also have SpamSieve enabled and 'Experimental 2.0 Features' enabled (glutton for punishment).

Is it possible that The priority of updates (I know nothing about imap) is push updates after pull and it just hasn't finished pulling almost 10GB of messages over a slow connection? Does it pull down attachments by default? Does it pull down attachments in Trash?

Is there anything else I can tell you that would help diagnose (I love this program) or is a nearly 200,000 message archive too much of an edge case?

It's not really IMAP as such, but MailMate probably doesn't synchronize your local changes until after the involved mailboxes are fully synchronized (I'm not quite sure about the order of events).

Yes, all messages are fetched in full - including Trash. MailMate is (so-called) fully offline and is currently not very flexible about this.

The problem with Gmail is that it is likely that your connection has also been throttled due to the high level of traffic. This makes it hard to say whether or not something is wrong when synchronization takes a lot of time.

200K messages should be within reach for MailMate (depending on your hardware, in particular, memory). The crash reports do seem to indicate that MailMate is running out of address space though during import -- this could be a bug, but MailMate should pick up where it left after a restart.

    OSX Version 10.8.5
    MacBook Pro, 17-inch, Late 2011
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1333MHzDDR3
    Startup Disk SSD

Memory: MailMate is currently using about 1.25GB, there's about 6GB 'idle' and 33MB 'Free'. Since I got the SSD drive, I'm less sensitive to swapping slowdowns and hardly notice when I have so little free ram.

    Thanks for the ultrafast response!

Now that MailMate has finally stopped pulling messages from Gmail (after 3 days), this issue seems to be resolved.

    • State changed from “new” to “closed”

Thanks for the update. I'll note it as yet another reason to look into improving the initial synchronization of (large) accounts.
