Reply to wrong message when new mail arrives

Reported by Alan Dobkin | January 20th, 2023 @ 07:10 PM

My message lists are sorted chronologically with new mail appearing at the bottom. When I right-click (or control-click) on the last message in the list, sometimes a new message appears at the same moment I am selecting the Reply command from the pop-up menu. MailMate then opens a reply to the new message in the composition window instead of the one I had already selected.

This has happened to me surprisingly often lately, although I can't easily recreate it. If I can confirm the exact circumstances, I will post an update here. I think it started in a recent test build, since I don't recall it happening a few months ago, but that could be wrong. I tend to update to the latest test build whenever it is released. I am currently running 5934.

Coincidentally, it just happened again after I opened this ticket. This time, I noticed it wasn't the last message in the list. When the new message appears, it pushes each existing message in the list up by one line. Although the original message remains selected, the next message is now in that same position in the list. MailMate opens that one in reply composition window instead of the one selected. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen in earlier test releases, but I don't know how far back it started.

FWIW, it looks like this issue is not just about replies. I noticed it also caused me to tag the wrong message as it got bumped up in the list. Most of these mistakes are easily reversible, but I'm concerned it may cause me to do something worse, like marking an important message as junk or replying too quickly to the wrong message. Incidentally, I am running the latest test build, which is now Beta version 5937.

One of my fears just occurred. I was dragging a message to a file it in another folder. The outline column clearly showed I was dragging the correct message. While I was in mid-drag, a new message arrived in my inbox and pushed up the lines, but the outline column still showed the correct message data. However, as soon as I let go to drop the message, I noticed the correct message was still in my inbox, and the message below it had disappeared. I checked the destination folder and was able to move it back and then re-move the correct one, but this is becoming more problematic.

Any ideas on why this started happening recently and what can be done to fix it?

This problem appears to be resolved in one of the recent experimental test builds. I have not noticed it occurring in the past month or two, and I have been keeping up with the update releases on a weekly basis. I am currently running r6017.

Thanks for all of your efforts, Benny! I will post an update here if I see it happen again.
