Can't get OAUTH to open a browser window

I've been using Mailmate for years with my exchange account,
using the IMAP and SMTP settings. It usually works with no
problem.
But now I can't get Mailmate to open a browser window, during the
OAUTH process, to enter my password and my two
factor-authentication code.
I have deleted Mailmate, all the local Library files (applicaiton support, preferences, cache), so I can start over with a fresh install. But the moment I enter my SMTP/IMAP settings, the wheel start spinning and Mailmate does not open a browser window. I've experimented with using a different default browser, but still no luck.
Who has a clue how to fix this?
