Memory Leak Symptoms

Reported by Alan Dobkin | July 25th, 2025 @ 05:00 PM

I've been using MailMate for several years and keep up with the test releases. Roughly every 2-3 weeks with my typical usage patterns, the application eventually becomes unstable and stops working properly. Once it gets into this situation, the only way to get it working again is to completely close out the program and launch it again.

Here are the symptoms:

1. I continue to receive and can open new messages, however I cannot reply or compose/send messages. Sometimes it will allow me to reply to certain ones but not others.
1a. With the reply function, it doesn't open the compose window at all.
1b. With the new message function, it opens the compose window, and I can type out the content, but then the Send button is completely unresponsive.
2. If I try to copy/paste message text into another application, it pastes as follows:

Error Domain=WKErrorDomain Code=5 "JavaScript execution returned a result of an unsupported type" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=JavaScript execution returned a result of an unsupported type}
2a. If I try the commands Show Raw Message or Show HTML Source, those also display the same error text.
3. Saving existing messages as drafts also becomes unreliable and may or may not actually save. I've had to resort to accessing the raw files in the Autosaved Messages folder in order to retrieve them.
4. Quitting the program does not save my session. In other words, existing tabs disappear and need to be re-opened manually.

As to my "usage patterns", I tend to open a lot of tabs (10-20 or more) and leave a lot of draft message windows (around 10) open as I get various urgent requests throughout the day. Sometimes I don't have time to go back and finish/close them out until a few days later. Eventually, after 2-3 weeks when this problem occurs, I have to make notes in a separate application as reminders of where I left off and then close them all out in order to start the program fresh. This cycle has repeated itself many times over the past few years using every beta and test release I've tried. I've tried to improve my habits and keep less tabs/windows open, and I am open to feedback on that too, but I haven't found a better method to improve my workflow. Aside from that, it would be nice if MailMate somehow managed the tab memory usage better so I am not forced to close out and restart periodically. I'm not sure if this same problem is happening to others, which is why I finally typed up this bug report.

Thanks,
Alan
