It took some time, but I expect this to be fixed in r5889+. Sorry about the delay.

as a data point – I upgraded to Monterey about a week ago, and haven't noticed any CPU abuse since the upgrade

My guess is that it might be related to a message that MailMate is trying to upload to the server, but it doesn't like it. The email is in the Archive mailbox. ...
