Deleting an address completion entry

Reported by Des Dougan | July 14th, 2019 @ 07:42 PM

I've tried various means to delete an address completion entry with no success. Is there a way to get rid of an out of date address?

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Both in the headers view and in the popup menu for addresses in the Composer, you should see a “Blacklist” item. This can be used to prevent the address from being used in autocompletion. The only other way is to delete/move any emails sent to the individual since MailMate bases its guesses on existing sent messages (also see settings in the Composer preferences pane).

I see the option in the Headers view, but not in the Composer (I assume you mean after selecting an address in a new email window?) - if I type the beginning of the address, I see the autofill, but right clicking doesn’t give me any options.

You have to “commit” the address first to make it a token. Then at the right end of the token you'll see a triangle which can open a menu.

Could you add a screenshot? I'm trying to discard some addresses with typos, and I do not understand what to find and where. Thanks in advance.

@Emmanuel: I'll try to describe it better:

    1. Open a composer window (New Message).
    2. Start entering a recipient.
    3. Select the erroneous recipient address.

At this point you should see a bluish (or at least colored) token for the address.

    1. Click on the small downwards arrow a the right end of the colored token.
    2. Select “Blacklist ...” in the menu shown.

(Note: The feature will likely be renamed at some point.)

I’m not seeing the token when I select an incorrect address in the composer. I’m running 5887.

I can't upload a screenshot - it shows "quota reached" at the bottom of this dialog.

FWIW, I was curious about this also. I do see the option to blacklist addresses in the composer, but I hadn't noticed this before. It works just fine, although it is a bit counterintuitive. If an address is problematic, the last thing I would want to do naturally is commit it to be a recipient in the message composer in order to blacklist it.

In comparison, there are a few ways to do this in Thunderbird (which are also not ideal), including simply highlighting the bad address and pressing the Delete key (or Shift-Delete on Mac) or removing it from the Collected Addresses list in Address Book. Here are a few reference posts about it:

Also, I see you noted that this feature will likely be renamed at some point. I think that is a good idea. The term blacklist makes me think that I am preventing them from being able to communicate. I just want to remove their entry from my auto-complete selections but still be able to send to and receive messages from them in the future. Does blacklisting an address currently prevent this?

Lastly, is it possible to see a list of addresses which have already been blacklisted? How can someone be removed from the blacklist?

I found the answer to my last question myself. The addresses are stored here:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Blacklist.plist

It is a simple file containing a list of these addresses. They could either be removed by control-clicking on the address in the sent message and choosing "Remove … from blacklist" or deleting them manually from this file.
