Reported by Rob Morrison | December 2nd, 2014 @ 05:10 PM

Hi,

I've had a serious issue - mailmate crashed today and seems to have moved all my email to the trash folders on all 4 of my email accounts.

i use google apps / servers for my email so i have checked via web mail and has the same problem via gmail.com

can you advise how this can be resolved asap please?

thanks in advance,
rob

I cannot see any way a crash would cause such behavior, but maybe an (implicit) action telling MailMate to move that many emails could cause the crash. If it did then it happened after MailMate stored the action since the action appears to have been completed after the crash.

Since it happened for all 4 accounts then I agree that MailMate was probably the one moving the messages, but I cannot see how it could happen randomly. I'll be interested in knowing what you did before this happened. Changing rules, smart mailboxes, searches, or anything else which might be move-related.

With respect to resolving the issue. If you are careful then we might be able to reverse the action, but it's important that you do not rebuild the database or anything similar to that. If MailMate is now in a non-crashing state then it is likely that the previous location of all messages are still stored in its database.

I'm a bit pressed for time right now, but I can give further instructions later tonight. It might also require me to make a special build of MailMate to reverse the move-actions.

    Thanks for your patience.

    ok.
sounds good - thanks for prompt response.

one thing i did do was to move all the messages in the 'trash' folder into the archive folder on one account to test

this has shown up in both mailmate and gmail now. however, the sent items aren't showing up in the correct location so this needs to be resolved.

if you need any other information from me please let me know.

also, still using mailmate this afternoon and it no longer recognises emails address in the composer window - ie. when typing someones email that have used before there is an auto-fill that no longer appears..

Completion won't work when there no messages in Sent Messages.

I've attached a file that you should put in the following folder (which you need to create):

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Resources/MmMessagesOutlineView/

Relaunch MailMate, select your trash folder, and then enable the “Old Source” column in the messages outline. There is hope if this column is not empty and each value appears to point to the previous location of each message. If this is the case then I'll work on implementing a feature to help you move these messages back.

Are you sure you have no idea how all this started? No mailboxes with rules, for example? I'm not saying you moved the messages yourself, but if it's a bug then I would still expect some malfunctioning rule or something like that.

I've attached a file that you should put in the following folder (which you need to create):
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/ - these folders exist

Resources/MmMessagesOutlineView/ - neither of these do, should i create both of these?

    • i have tried the above and put the file in the folder. however when re-launching mailmate it doesn't give me the “Old Source” column..

Chat: Write me an email using “Help ▸ Send Feedback” if you can use something which can access Google Talk.

Yes, create both folders. You need to manually enable the column by right-clicking the header line of the messages outline.

If old source locations exist then copy the attached file to this location (again, create the folder):

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Resources/KeyBindings/

If you select a message in the trash and then hit ⌃⌥⇧M, the message should be moved to its previous location.

(This way I don't need to create a special build of MailMate to help you.)

    • State changed from “new” to “closed”

Closing the ticket: Most of the damage was resolved by making MailMate move messages back to their previous folder locations (this is cached by MailMate). The origin of the problem was unfortunately not located.
