Feature request: Thread by subject

Reported by David Harding | August 1st, 2012 @ 01:34 PM

Hi,

I'm a member of an online email forum and it seems like many members of the forum don't understand that they can't click reply to all and then change the subject. Is there a way to simply thread emails by subject?

Keep up the great work with the awesome email app!

-David.

No, not yet. I did create the underlying code with the purpose of
allowing alternative threading schemes, but for now only flat/no
threading and strict header-based threading is available.

By the way, if a user does what you describe when using MailMate then a
warning is shown requiring the user to confirm that they do not want to
create a new thread even though they changed the subject.

    Hi Benny,

Thank you for your quick response. Do you plan on implementing this feature soon? If so, when? It is actually what will unfortunately stop me from using MailMate into the future.

    Thank you,

    -David.

No plans soon, but maybe what you really need is that I make MailMate better at automatically breaking threads when subjects change “a lot”. This is perhaps more likely to be done sooner. Do you think this would be sufficient?

    Hi Benny,

So long as it broke the thread every time a big change was made - then yeah that would be perfect.

    Looking forward to it,

    Thanks,

    -David

Should I open another ticket for "alternative threading schemes" where there is an option to add dumb subject-based threading (date sorted) after the "header-based threading" is complete?

This would help organise threads from ticketing systems that do not send the same Message-ID each time someone replies to the same ticket in the web UI, and the email is sent to watchers. (JIRA does this).

And can we change the title of this one so it doesn't appear in google search.

@Charlie: No need for a new ticket. When I eventually add an alternative “group” threading mode then I also expect it to be able to base threading on subject.body only.

I'm also pretty keen to see this implemented. I too consider this a potential blocker to me adopting MailMate as my goto client (I really really want to though - everything else is refreshingly splendid).
