"Connected" IMAP Mailbox not synchronizing

Reported by Alexander Kucera | January 17th, 2017 @ 08:19 AM

Hi Benny,

yesterday I decided to set up one of my machines as SpamSieve drone so I could get rid of all the various SpamSieve installations and also get Spam filtering on my iPhone as a benefit. I set up everything according to the SpamSieve manual.

I created a TrainSpam and TrainGood mailbox with the corresponding mailbox rules and set the mailbox' synchronization schedule to "Connected". Everything looked ok to me.

Then this morning I got a Spam mail in my Inbox and I was excited to try the system. I moved the mail to the TrainSpam mailbox. Only to be greeted by the same spam mail two hours later on another (freshly booted) machine. Inside the TrainSpam mailbox.

I openend the drone mail window and there the Spam mail was sitting in the Junk folder as expected. I tried to run Synchronize All on the account. Made no difference. Then I synchronized just the TrainSpam mailbox on the drone and that worked. Now the correct state shows up on my other machine.

Any idea what's up? I'll monitor the situation and might try to set the sync schedule to a timed interval. Maybe the connection was idling out over night?

I just received a false positive in my Junk folder. I corrected it by putting the mail into TrainGood and after a couple of minutes it appeared in the correct location, namely my Inbox. I had switched the synchronization schedule to 5 minutes for this.

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

It does sound like MailMate failed to realize that the “idle” connection was no longer working. This should actually take at most 15 minutes.

If you keep the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) open then you can use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs” when you believe MailMate has gotten into this state.

How many mailboxes are in the “Connected” state?

There are three "Connected" mailboxes on that account. Inbox and the two SpamSieve training ones.

Since I switched the schedule to every 5 minutes instead of connected everything has been working fine. I'll try to switch back to connected and send you the logs when it happens again.

You could try with 2 connected first. I'd like to know if 2 and/or 3 connected mailboxes triggers the issue.

    Hi Benny,

so I have been running with two connected mailboxes and one scheduled since yesterday and while I did not receive a ton of mail in that time, everything has been working fine so far. Seems there is indeed a difference between two and three connected mailboxes. Server issue? Or MailMate issue? How would you like me to proceed?

If 2 or 3 makes a difference then it's a MailMate bug likely triggered when the number of connected mailboxes is the same as the maximum number of connections.

Could you check to see if it fails again if using 3 connected mailboxes. Just to be sure.

If it fails then you increase the maximum number of connections like this:

    maxNumberOfConnections = 4;

For the related account in this file:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/Sources.plist

If that makes it work again then I'm pretty sure we found the trigger.

Alright. I'll keep testing it and will report back next week.
