Is it possible when replying to automatically start typing above the quoted text. And more importantly: to put the signature above the quoted text? I couldn't find anything about that…

A global default is provided in the Composer preferences pane (⌘,). MailMate also learns your habits, so if you used the “Top” option in the Signatures menu then MailMate would soon learn that this was your preference. But it's good to set the global preference if you use top posting most of the time.
The “learning” also works the other way, if you use “Bottom” for certain recipients then MailMate will remember that this is your preference for them (for example, if you write me by email then you might adopt my style, but only when writing to me).

Many thanks for the swift reply!
I'd set the global default to "top" before (I'd found that myself), but that doesn't keep the composer from beginning at the bottom (although I never do that manually!). Learning works fine, though – it's an amazing feature! Any suggestions for the global default? -

Since the previous default was bottom then MailMate probably
“learned” that you did not explicitly change this (since you probably edited the message manually without changing the top/bottom
state). This means that MailMate learned that you preferred bottom and
this would still have an effect when you changed the global default to
“top”. It should have worked if you had clicked “Reset Usage History” as well.(If MailMate does not know the recipient and the preferred top/bottom choice then it looks at messages sent from the same account and then
chooses what is most frequently used.)I can see that this is not very intuitive. I'll think about how this can
be improved.[state:resolved]

I don't see the option of where to place reply text in my preferences/composer. Am I missing something?

@vermagic: See the Signatures preferences pane (⌘,). The top most options control signature placement and caret placement. This implicitly controls where the reply text is place.

This doesn't seem to work properly for me. Here's what happens:
- I choose to reply.
- The cursor is positioned at the bottom.
- I change the Signature option to "top"
- the Display updates to the top of the message compose
window.
- I press a key to insert text.
- Display updates back to the bottom and the text gets inserted at the bottom instead of the top.
I don't really understand the Mac internals, but it looks almost like the display is updated to the top of the screen, but the insertion point is not. But that's just a guess.
- I choose to reply.

@Robert: If you always want to reply at top then you should change the setting in the Signatures preferences pane and click “Reset Usage History” to make sure MailMate has not learned something else for specific recipients.
In general, the settings are going to be a bit more flexible in the future (in the Signatures preferences pane). Hopefully, that'll also cover the behaviour you expect from MailMate. If you want then you can try the so-called 2.0BETA which is very similar to the 1.9.7 branch, but it has a few more GUI options.
