First Sync Extremely Slow

I'm trying out MailMate and synchronizing to an IMAP server with ~350,000 messages (~50,000 in the inbox) and it's going extremely slowly. What's more, it hangs for multiple (sometimes dozens of) seconds where I can't click, type, etc. I've had it running for many hours and it appears to be maybe 30 to 50 percent done. I looked at syslog and noticed that I'm getting spin dumps (one attached), so it seems there's clearly something going wrong.

350K messages pushes MailMate to its current limit depending on the hardware used (I know a few users have 4-500K messages). The number of messages in a single mailbox is not a problem. Parts of the design of MailMate do not scale well and although I do have some promising optimizations on my list, MailMate is unlikely to ever be able to handle, e.g., a million messages.
There could of course be something else wrong such as a message or mailbox triggering an unknown problem, but I assume the problem is the size of the account. It is worth checking though that a virus checker is not making the problem even worse.
Note that the latest beta should be a bit better, but don't expect it to solve this problem (see the Software Update preferences pane in MailMate or download directly here).
Note that when adding/editing an account, it is possible to use “Edit Subscriptions...” to only fetch a subset of mailbox -- if that is an option for you.

Thanks for the info. A bit sad, as I cannot restrict the email and I need (well, want up to the point of needing ;-) ) to keep an archive. Maybe I'll try this for my home email for a while.
