Can't change font or bold

I can't bold, italic etc using cmd+ the corresponding letter. If I click Format >> show fonts and try to change, it won't let me format pre-existing text; only new text. How do I fix this?

MailMate is a plain text email client. Font changes are not possible (the menu item is there for changing fonts in the GUI -- lists, message view, and the composer), and word emphasis and other styling is only possible using the Markdown markup language (the same which is used in this ticket system).
