unselection of e-mails

Hello,
Sometimes when I flush my email box, archiving some emails part of threads drive to a situation where no e-mail is selected. This is not very convenient when reading and archiving all past emails il a row (need to take the mouse, click on an e-mail, and start again the process).
I think it would be a good practice that an e-mail is always selected in the list. Which one is another question :)

I know I'm a bit lazy now, but could you describe the circumstances needed for a no-selection situation to occur?

It happens each time I archive a message which is part of a thread and whose subsequent messages are not unfolded.
On the picture attached, If I click on [Archive], no message is selected after.
