MailMate stopped working

Reported by Kelly Matthews | January 30th, 2014 @ 02:14 AM

The program suddenly stopped syncing email for all my accounts. Some are gmail some are not. I have logged into each account externally and there is in fact new mail but it's not syncing. I took each account offline and then back on and still nothing. Any idea what the issue might be?

Look under SOURCES in the mailbox outline and check that all mailboxes are online (not displayed with a grey color). Also check that any INBOX mailboxes are displayed with a bold font. This means that MailMate is ready to be notified of new messages.

Yes as my original comment stated I took each account offline and then back online. they grey out then come back when I do this. And yes I had several new messages in all 7 of my accounts, not all are gmail. Even this morning no new messages downloaded, I had hundreds sitting there. Should I consider uninstalling and reinstalling?

I would like to find out what the issue is before you try that. Please open the “Activity Viewer” (⌥⌘0) and see if you can find anything suspicious, primarily if there is a lack of activity.

Here is also a long shot. Try quitting MailMate and then paste the following in the Terminal:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmEnableIMAPCondstore -bool NO

    Then restart MailMate.

tried both nothing strange with Activity viewer. Also ran the code in terminal and restarted, no luck.

I definitely see it "checking" for email - like the wheel will start spinning (next to the mail account) but it just doesn't pull down mail. As far as I know I didn't install anything yesterday that could have caused the issue. I'm willing to reinstall if necessary though.

If the spinner does not stop then it sounds like it's hanging when trying to check for email. Try this:

    1. Take the accounts offline.
    2. Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0).
    3. Take 1 account online.
    4. Locate this account in the Activity Viewer and click on one of its connections.

The lower part of the Activity Viewer shows a log of the communication with the server. Copy this into a message to me (use “Help ▸ Send Feedback” or use the direct email address at http://freron.com/contact).

Reinstalling won't help, but you can try starting over by removing all data saved by MailMate. This means you have to re-add your accounts and let MailMate fetch the emails again. You can do this by removing/moving the following folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/

No the spinner stops, sorry should have been clear. I'll remove the accounts and add them back one at a time and see what happens.

THis is happening to me. Since March 27th, no new mail has come into mailmate and I've had to check on my phone. 2 gmail accounts and a runbox account. Any ideas?

I should say I tried what's been talked about in this thread. will reinstall if I must (but would prefer not)

Also: I've done the "Send Feedback" from activity viewer log as you outlined above, and referenced this lighthouse thread. Any help would be appreciated as I would prefer not to have to uninstall/reinstall. -b

@Brandon: I don't seem to have received an email from you. I would also prefer that you waited with the re-install until I can get some more information about the problem.

If/when you do a reinstall then you can do it by renaming this folder:

     ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/

That would allow you to go back to the faulty state if I need more information.

    Please check:

    • Are all accounts/mailboxes online. See under SOURCES in the mailbox outline. Anything offline uses a grey color.
    • Are the INBOX'es in the connected state, that is, are they drawn with a bold font.

Finally, update to the latest test release since the logs are bit better: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.

Sorry about the inconvenience of this issue (whatever it is).

First, the sent-sound isn't played until after the server has accepted the message (via SMTP). If this is reproducible behavior then let me know, but I think either the server failed to handle it correctly or Lighthouse dropped the message.

Thanks for the log. It seems to be fine and I think we need to simplify this issue:

    • Select all the mailboxes of the account and use “Take Offline” (do not take the account offline).
    • Find or create an empty IMAP mailbox (really empty).
    • Put 1 message in it using, e.g., webmail.
    • Synchronize the mailbox in MailMate.

If the mailbox is still empty then we have a simple test case to analyze. Logs in the Activity Viewer should also be very simple.

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, posted the log without commentary. The folder is called "MailMate" and I took it offline/online twice. There is one message in it (which shows through web interface) but it doesn't pull it into MailMate.

Ok, now change the “Displayed Count” of the mailbox to “All”. Is the count 0 or 1?

(If 1 then I have another user with the same issue and we are probably getting closer to a solution.)

  • Brandon Jones

    Brandon Jones April 1st, 2014 @ 12:17 PM

It's 0. It was set at inherit but I changed it to all. Still says 0 though.

Ok, can you find the message somewhere inside this folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/IMAP/...

Also, could you send me this file (use “Help ▸ Send Feedback” if you like):

    ~/Library/Application\ Support/MailMate/Sources.plist

  • Brandon Jones

    Brandon Jones April 3rd, 2014 @ 10:28 AM

OK. I've done both of those things (checked for the messages and couldn't find it after digging around in the appropriate IMAP subfolders.

I've also sent a copy of the sources.plist (from 2 different addresses - catalyze.in address and a gmail address).

Hopefully one of those will come through. Sorry for not updating in a couple of days. I'm in Kenya and don't always have stesady access to internet.

  • benny

    benny April 3rd, 2014 @ 10:48 AM

I see no problems with the Sources.plist file. I'm running out of ideas that won't require a specialized debug version of MailMate. There is one thing I would like to see though:

    1. Open the Activity Viewer.
    2. Have the INBOX/MailMate mailbox online.
    3. Use a different client/webmail to add another message to the mailbox.
    4. Tell MailMate to synchronize it.
    5. Send me the output from the Activity Viewer.

I expect MailMate to be told that there are now 2 messages in the mailbox and I would then like to see if anything else happens in the log.

Also, update to the latest test version: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking I'm going to have uninstall/reinstall. Is their a way to save my smart mailboxes?

  • benny

    benny April 5th, 2014 @ 12:12 PM

Thanks for the output. It does look like MailMate simply ignores the new message, but I have no idea what could trigger that.

To start over, you can rename this folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate

By renaming, I can still ask you to swap the old database back into action if I have a debug version of MailMate for you. If you have time for that?

To keep the smart mailboxes, you can copy this file:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Mailboxes.plist

(And other .plist files in the same folder to keep other settings.)

  • Brandon Jones

    Brandon Jones April 6th, 2014 @ 10:06 AM

Ok. It's frustrating. I backed up that folder first off. Then I deleted the app plus some Library files associated (in cache folder, preferences folder, application support).

When I download and put it in the application folder and open and add an account, it exhibits the same behavior: no messages shown. It also still displays my registration so I'm wondering if their are some settings that I'm not deleting that are also the cause for the problem?

I hope to get it worked out as MailMate has vastly improved my general prod workflow and I'm not excited about the possibility of moving back to mail or something else.

Thanks for the details. This is very surprising. To confirm, wiping out these should reset MailMate completely:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist

The license key is stored in the keychain, but that should certainly not have any role to play in this problem.

I might have a second user with the same problem. I guess that's a good thing with respect to figuring out what triggers it.

    Is ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/IMAP empty? (Except for a State.plist file.)

If no messages are found then you could archive the folder (and the preferences file) and send it all to me. (I guess if you can start over and reproduce the behavior with a test account then I could also try synchronizing the account myself with your files.)

    To verify the current status:

    • Everything has been reset.
    • Single account added.
    • The account synchronizes and the mailboxes of the account can be seen.
    • The mailboxes appear to be online.
    • The INBOX of the account is online and idle (bold font).
    • No messages are fetched.
    • “Activity Viewer” shows that messages are found (x EXISTS response where x != 0).

And yes, it's frustrating, but it's also a high priority for me. I really want to figure out what the problem is.

    I finally got it working!!

Here's what I did: Several Uninstall->reboot->reinstalls didn't do the trick so I uninstalled -> fixed permissions (although it didn't list anything "fixed" associated with mailmate) -> rebooted -> reinstalled.

Now I'm cooking with gas, to use an American cliche :)

I don't know if that process gives you any insight. I'm willing to chalk it up to a potential permission issue. The other thing to note: when it started happening, I was in the midst of a media project and extremely low on disk space, so I'm not sure if that triggered an issue (all through this process of fixing though I've had 20gb+ free).

@Brandon: I'm glad it works for you, but as you state I haven't really gained the insight necessary to fix the issue. The “low on disk space” hint might be important though. This might have been the trigger for the problem although it does not explain why it was so difficult to start over.
