Toolbar text mode doesn't work

MailMate's toolbar seems to rely on the visibility of icons. If you attempt to display the toolbar using only text, the toolbar becomes useless. Almost perplexingly, the "icons" are actually text and the real "text" setting doesn't work. Mail.app, also shown in the image, shows how to correctly handle grouped toolbar buttons.
The "icons" don't necessarily need to be icons, but I think that the text part of the buttons should mirror the buttons functionality instead of merely being a text description of the group.
