Archiving for offline use.

Reported by Sean Cota | July 29th, 2013 @ 02:17 PM

I'm testing Mailmate as a replacement for Mac Mail. I have 7 different IMAP emails currently for various consulting work projects. I need to be able store these emails offline for the time when the IMAP accounts are shutdown by domain owner (not me).

I receive nearly 50 to 200 emails a day. Many I need later for research data, and more importantly liability protection. As a consultant, I am only protected to the extent that I can prove my case, or I'm broke and there is nothing to sue for.

Please advise.

All the best,

-Sean

MailMate is a fully offline email client. This means that all messages are synchronized in full to your local machine. You can think of this as a primary backup of the messages on the server. If the server goes down then you have a copy of all messages locally.

Now, an “evil” or very buggy server might tell MailMate that all messages have been deleted and then MailMate will also delete the messages in the local cache. You are protected against this if you have a backup of your local machine.

Finally, if you need to export messages from MailMate then you can do it by using drag'n'drop to the folder where you want your backup. Each message is an individual file in the standard format (also used internally by MailMate). Future versions of MailMate are likely to make it easier to do this automatically.

If what you need is to have messages in MailMate which are not present on the server (POP3-like behavior) then I don't have a solution for you. MailMate is an IMAP client.

    Does this answer your question?

    Thanks for trying out MailMate.
