No sound when counter increases

I've got a counter configured to show unread messages in my inbox. All the options for the counter are checked, and I've selected a sound, and while the badges and notifications are always displayed, no sound is every played.
The relevant section from com.freron.MailMate looks fine.

First check that this system preference is enabled: “System Preferences ▸ Sound ▸ Sound Effects ▸ Play user interface sound effects”.
If that is not the problem then there is a debug variable for sounds which could help track down the problem (if you show me the output):
defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugPlaySound -bool YESFinally, I've had a user in the past for which a similar problem was resolved by restarting the machine, but I do not know what originally caused his problem.

If others have the same problem and find the solution in this ticket then I encourage them to add a comment. I'd like to know if I should spend time adding code to detect the problem and warn the user.

I've just got one other point to add: MailMate needs to be quit and then relaunched before the change in System Preferences takes hold.
