Compose new message -> default message syntax

Reported by David | June 29th, 2025 @ 09:09 AM

Hi there,

if i remember correct, i used to have a setting that would behave like this:

  1. I create a new message
  2. I would then see "Plain text" as the (default) formatting used (which is what i prefer)
  3. I then start typing a message, and as soon as i would for example make text Bold (or use some other rich text formatting), Mailmate would automatically switch from the default "Plain text" to "Markdown" format.

I can't figure out for the life of me, what combination of settings to set in the Preferences, to achieve this.
Or, am i confused with some other e-mail client?

Please advise :-)
Thank you!

    I don't think you are confused. It did work like this earlier on, but it's a long time ago now (for beta/test releases).

    Note that if Markdown markup is not used then HTML is not generated for the email. The only real difference from a plain text email is that the Content-Type header says Markdown which will be ignored by most email clients (any but MailMate?). MailMate uses it to know that it can trust the plain text to either be Markdown text or at least not contain any Markdown markup (if the message is used later on or if it is a message you receive and reply to).

    Ah, yes I did check the message source, but didn't fully understand what was going on there;

    Thank you for sharing the insight... :-)

    PS. Would be nice if this would be visible to the user somehow (to see when/if HTML is generated, and the message is no longer just plain text.)
