Inconsistent spacing before signature

Sometimes, my signature gets appended to the HTML part as its
own <p> tag (resulting in empty space above it),
yet at other times it gets added into the message body's last
paragraph with a <br> in between.
I can't figure out the logic when one or the other happens.
Personally would prefer the <br> so as not to
have extra space between the valediction and the signature.

HTML generation is not easy to get right and I tend to forget the small details. There's likely a trigger for the difference which could be related to why HTML is generated (embedded HTML / Markdown triggered HTML / HTML sig / ...). If you have simple examples (for me to reproduce it) then I can check to see why it happens (bug or necessity).
