Show raw message not working correctly with larger messages

#3435

Running 6265 (previous build did this as well), I'm seeing strange behaviour with "Show raw message" with larger messages (more than a few MB), including:

  • The raw view takes several seconds to display
  • The first screenful displays, but scrolling down gives me a blank screen
  • Nothing is displayed, and trying to scroll generates multiple error beeps

A particular message might display once, but then error on the next try.

This is not new. It should, in most cases, actually work if waiting long enough for the whole message to be displayed by the view. It's a performance issue. Currently, MailMate uses an HTML view to display the raw message and the only proper fix for this is likely to switch to a different type of view (NSTextView). Alternatively, MailMate should abbreviate the message by, e.g., shortening base64-segments. That would likely work well in most cases and it should be very rare that anyone would want to search within the base64-content. I might do the latter as a quick-fix and see if anyone complains. I'm annoyed by this issue myself since I tend to often want to look at the raw message for obvious reasons :)

Thanks Benny. Sounds perfect to me. Think that very little would be lost by shortening the base64 segments: if you want to search within those or otherwise see the complete raw message, you could still do that very easily by choosing Show in Finder and opening the message file in your favorite editor.
