Question: function of "View > Columns > Outline Column"

Hi there,
So i read the manual section "View > Messages Outline" [1], and mostly understand.
What i don't understand is, what exactly does changing the menu "View > Columns > Outline Column" do (also located in the context menu when right clicking a column header.) ?
When i change this from "From" to "Subject", etc. nothing seems to change, anywhere.
Please advise, thank you!
