mailmate crashing

mailmate is eating up my memory and crashing, or worse causing my macbook air to crash and restart. It hasn't been stable ever since I clicked the message recommending I update to the latest mailmate version. that update never completed because it hung up and crashed my computer, but it did something bad and I don't know how to undo it. help please.
