Email are missing in MailMate (using Mailmate in combination with Apple Mail and/or GMail)

Reported by Christian Meinerding | March 6th, 2024 @ 01:47 PM

Hi MailMate users,

I'm using MailMate for multiple years now and I like it a lot.

So my setup is

  • E-Mail provider: GMail (business and personal accounts)
  • Mac: MailMate
  • iPhone: AppleMail

Recently I'm noticing more and more that certain emails are no longer findable in MailMate. Especially if it is a longer thread, certain emails which I can see in gmail.com and do not see when searching for in MailMate.

Maybe this has something to do with how the combination of GMail as provider, MailMate and AppleMail work together? I'm really clueless.

Here is my MailMate config for the GMail IMAP account: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13c928iVlae7QRzRilIirh3LcBAs...

Has anybody seen something similar? Or knows how I can figure out what the problem is?

Christian

MailMate does not sync my Gmail properly if I configure my Gmail account to "Limit IMAP folders to contain no more than this many messages". I like to sync no more than 10000 messages, since I do not need my old messages on the local machine. I am happy to have them on Gmail server when I need to search old messages. MailMate indeed synchronizes 10000 messages, but not among the most recent ones. The selection seems arbitrary. It picks emails from 1997 up to 2024. Obviously, I do not need emails from the 90's. How can I fix it?

Are you perhaps also using this setting in your Gmail account?

PS: I realized afterward that Thunderbird shows the same behavior of arbitrarily picking emails from 1997 up to today, 08.03.2024. Apple Mail program does fetch the latest 10000 messages. It is a bit frustrating. I don't know if it is relevant to mention that I flagged all archived messages in Gmail as "[Gmail]/Archive", since MailMate appears not be able to properly handle Gmail. I wish there were up-to-date instructions on the best practice on how to use MailMate with Gmail.

PS1: Editing my previous post after taking a different approach. I remove my label "[Gmail]/Archive" and recreated it. It is likely that the index put by Google before was not reflecting the chronological order of my emails. Therefore I was missing many emails. This time, found the search "has:nouserlabels -in:sent -in:chat -in:draft -in:inbox" in Gmail extremely helpful to select only those messages that not labeled already. I moved these messages in the generic "[Gmail]/Archive" and resynced MailMate. Now it looks ok. However, it would be great if MailMate would take Apple approach about how they hacked Gmail duplicates. MailMate is beautiful. Gmail is beautiful. But the two together are not working so nicely.
