Colored Messages not working in recent test builds
Reported by Alan Dobkin | August 25th, 2023 @ 07:45 PM
Since updating to the recent experimental test releases (builds 5965-5975), my messages no longer display in color. I had configured them with a Styles.plist two years ago. That file has not changed since then. It is still located in the same MailMate folder under Application Support, and the pref for MmMessageColorsEnabled is still enabled as documented in #204 and here:
https://manual.mailmate-app.com/hidden_preferences#colored-messages
Please advise if this is a known issue, broken during the latest development changes. I realize this is not a critical feature, but it does help with productivity, and I look forward to it being restored at some point.
Thanks,
Alan

Re: [MlMt] How to reliably move incoming messages to separate mailboxes? With the elimination in recent versions of MailMate of support for the “hidden” feature for colouring messages in the inbox message list using a file called Styles.plist, I have been told by Benny that I need to use smart mailboxes to apply colours to messages in a combined message list.

That's potentially disappointing. Do the recent versions have a direct version of colouring?

Yes, see Benny's note (with the prefix "Update (Nov, 2022):") here: (Ticket #204)

Update (Nov, 2022): Most users will no longer need this low level feature. Recent test releases allow both changing color and the mailbox icon (see the Mailbox menu). A separate menu option then allows this color to be used in the message list (“Use Color in Message List”). Priority is given to the top-most mailbox using this setting.

There's no need to move messages for this coloring feature to work. IIRC, all you need to do is create smart mailboxes containing the conditions you want for coloring the messages. Then, use the Mailbox->Color submenu to choose a color for that mailbox, and also select "Use Color in Message List". Your chosen color will be applied not only to the messages in your smart mailbox, but also to the original messages, wherever they reside.

I just noticed this issue after switching to the Test Build.
While the new method of coloring messages works fine, it does not allow for other styles such as bold and italic that the styles.plist did. I made good use of these so would like to see their return.

@Seamus: I'll check if I can make a quick low-level fix, that is, a way to manually add these styles in a configuration file.

- State changed from new to resolved
@Seamus: In the next update (r6060), it should be possible to edit the
Mailboxes.plist
file when MailMate is NOT running, and then styling can be added to any mailbox like this:fontStyle = "bold";
Available variants are like before:
bold
,italic
andboldAndItalic
.
