Shifting mail to desktop

Reported by David Crippen | January 18th, 2013 @ 08:58 PM

MailMate said it moved all my Thunderbird prefs, and I can see the original folders I used to move mail from the IMAP server to the folders on my desktop. However, it doesn't seem to be doing that, as I found out when I tried to archive mail from the last few days to Mail Steward.

It seems that when I delete mail from the server, it also deletes it from my desktop folders (didn't in T-Bird). So Mail Steward won't find it.

Can I set MailMate to copy mail to my desktop folder free of the server capacity?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure I quite understand the question, but I can give you some facts which might answer it:

    • MailMate only supports IMAP. No local folders.
    • MailMate only imports the IMAP account settings from Thunderbird. Emails are then fetched from the server.
    • You can drag messages out of MailMate (for example, to your desktop) and they'll be exported. You can also drag them directly into other applications (if supported by the the applications).

Yes, my server is IMAP. I need all mail from MailMate to somehow end up on folders on my desktop. That's where Mail Steward finds it and archives it. Won't take anything from MailMate.

Is there any way I can set anything to automatically copy all MailMate mail to a desktop folder. There is in T-Bird and Apple Mail.

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”

I'm a bit surprised if Mail Steward cannot import standard emails (as created when dragged out of MailMate). Are you sure about this? The mbox format is almost just standard emails concatenated with a “unique” delimiter between messages.

MailMate does not have an mbox export option. Mainly because mbox is not quite just mbox.

In the future, it is going to be possible to create a script which copies a message to a desktop folder whenever it is put in the Archive mailbox of your IMAP account (as an example), but that does not help you now. I'll mark this ticket as “accepted” for the request of such a feature.

(A script could also be made which could create an mbox file of selected messages.)

Eudora was the gold standard. Moved mail to desktop automatically and removed it from the server. But that's kicking a dead horse.

So right now, where do I drag mail out of and to where? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with an "mbox".

I would create a folder on the desktop, e.g., named like this:

    /Users/<login name>/Desktop/ExportedFromMailMate/

Then I would tell Mail Steward of this location and then try to drag messages out of MailMate and into the folder above.

I'll see if I can get a trial version of Mail Steward to see if I can make it work.

The solution above worked for me with Mail Steward.

Does not work. Mail Steward creates a database different than a plain folder. Will not accept a plain folder on the desktop. Will only save mail to the old database Mail Steward created in the Documents file.

    1. The Mail Steward database in "Documents"
    2. The saved mail folder as you suggested on Desktop
    3. The mail inside the saved mail desktop folder
    4. All the mail on MailMate was saved up till 1/13/13. then it stopped saving mail from then on. this is the "archive" button to save everything from 1/13/1e3 to 1/19/13 in the "Sent" and "Deleted" folders on MailMate.
    5. The path to the data folder Mail Steward made in Documents.
    6. After archiving, the mail to 1/13/13 is all there. None of the new mail saved.

And did you also point MailSteward to the folder with exported emails (the bottom part of the Accounts preferences pane)? (You did not attach an image of that which is why I'm asking.)

Oooops. A little detail I forgot. Now I have it archived but in a different database. Would be nice if I could combine it with the original database but I have Main Steward Lite and it doesn't seem to want to let me do that without paying for a bigger app.

But this seems to work and will save my bacon, thanks again for great service. I stuck my head in an oven when Eudora died. MailMate is the closest thing to it. Mailforge never worked.

I'm not sure what's possible in Mail Steward. Maybe you could start over and re-import the messages to the original database. As I understood it, the only limitation in Mail Steward was the total number of messages (15K I think).

I'll keep this ticket open until I can offer you this (quoting myself): “In the future, it is going to be possible to create a script which copies a message to a desktop folder whenever it is put in the Archive mailbox of your IMAP account,...”
