makeFirstResponder keybindings no longer working

It seems that my makeFirstResponder: keybindings
have stopped working (nothing happens). Noticed in 5930 (I think),
then upgraded to 5964.
This a is a subset of what I have set up:
"q" = ("makeFirstResponder:", "mailboxesOutline");
"w" = ("makeFirstResponder:", "mainOutline");
"e" = ("makeFirstResponder:", "messageView");

Weirder still, I have 2 systems with 5964 on 12.6.5 both running the same config, and the keybindings work on one system (M1) but not the other one (Intel).

Further details. On the Intel system:
- I can actually move from the messageView to both the mailboxesOutline (with q) and the mainOutline (with w).
- with the mainOutline (message list) focused, neither q or e does anything.
- From the mailboxesOutline, both w and e work IF I focused the outline with q from the messageView. If it was focused with a mouse click, w and e do nothing.

I was also looking for a way to automatically select the body of a message to be able to tab through links and open them with "enter". Even though "messageView" comes, it focusses only the header, but not the body of a message. I tried finding similar identifiers in the layouts folder, but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.
