Can't attach RTFD

Trying to attach an RTFD document to an email, I get "cannot attach folders"

This is because RTFDs are folders (the D at the end stands for directory). If you click on "Show Package Contents..." in the Finder via the context menu, you will see the contents of the folder. Min. one RTF file and possibly images etc. - these are so-called bundles (as you already know them from programmes (.app).
tl;dr: you have to package folders as archives, e.g. ZIP.

Yes, as Mike wrote, it really is a folder.
Compressing a folder can be done using the Finder. There's a menu item named “Compress...” when right-clicking a folder.
