NiceToHaveBack: Colored Folder Icons
Reported by Steven Taylor | July 6th, 2022 @ 07:09 PM
an older version of MM used colored folder icons, now they're monochromatic. Hard to see where I am (a common fault of monochrome icons in general). I'm on the latest beta 5852, because I'm on Monterey.
I've looked at the mailing list as far back as 2020, Lighthouse, the Hidden preferences and I can't find any method to change them back.
There is a low level preference for this. I think I tried it, and it didn't work for me (my implementation error??). The newest version of Mail on Monterey uses monochrome icons. I could extract the old Mail icons from Mojave and place them into a Pictures folder (not the Photos database), but I don't know if that will work.
Thanks.

For various reasons, MailMate has switched to the collection of images provided by Apple (SF Symbols). There is still some code to handle the old hidden preference, but I'm not really sure it works and it will eventually be removed.
But, MailMate does support explicitly assigning colors to mailbox icons and this color can then also be used in the message list if preferred. See the “Mailbox > Color” menu: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane to get the latest test release.
(There's also support for multicolor SF Symbols, but there's not yet a way to change the symbols directly in the GUI.)
