<Feature Request> Multiline (or customizable) message list

Reported by leeb | October 15th, 2012 @ 03:20 PM

Currently MailMate displays the message list purely as a simple single line with configurable columns. This scales very poorly for Widescreen view, and isn't necessarily as readable in any view as it might be. In Widescreen for example I'd prefer something along the lines of:

**Sender**         time(right aligned)
Subject
*Mailbox*
* Flags/Important/Info Icons

Having a preference item where we could easily specify how we'd like it laid out would be the best solution of all. Many programs handle this by listing what the different possible elements, either as keywords or draggable buttons, so the user can just put them in the order they'd like, format them, and then MailMate could display it appropriately. A set of icons/badges that can be used to indicate various statuses would also enhance information density.

    You make it sound very easy :-)

    I have previously given this some thought and I do not oppose an alternative single column messages outline (in particular for widescreen layouts). If possible (with regard to performance) I would likely implement it as a column of Webviews. In other words, it would be configurable using HTML/CSS. But it is not a trivial task and it does not currently have a high priority. Therefore I've marked this ticket as “bluesky” (nice to have but not soon to come). A GUI for configuring it is definitely a bluesky feature.

    I also want to use HTML/CSS for a replacement of the current headers view. That is a higher priority, but it is also a good stepping stone for the implementation of an alternative messages outline.

    Fair enough, but at the same time try to be careful not to over engineer it. I think HTML/CSS and Webviews is pretty overkill honestly, there should be a bit of a happy medium between that and simple rich text for a few elements. Even an unconfigurable, static alternative that merely replicated Mail's view (though perhaps without the unnecessary message preview text) would be a significant improvement in the meantime. I know there's tons of other stuff on your plate of course (I myself am as guilty as anyone with my request for improved crypto/signing), but even so GUI polish may actually be one of the more major things MailMate could use. Anyway, thanks for putting it on the list :).

    I'm wondering if there has been any progress on this...in my opinion, having a multiline message list would be much nicer for the widescreen layout.

    I would also very much appreciate this enhancement.

    Seeing a large quantity of messages vertically is useful for many people, and is the historical standard for email clients. For me it is more useful to see at-a-glance a richer set of data per message (date/sender/subject/size/folder/flags/etc) for a smaller quantity of messages in a mailbox, without needing to dedicate the entire screen width to the message list.

    I too support a multiline view in the message list. It would make the workflow much more efficient by seeing more info in the emails before opening or clicking on them, while retaining the wide screen email view. Airmail 3/4 (far inferior IHMO to MailMate) has a really nice message list view that made me realise the benefit of this feature.

    Hi, another vote for a more flexible message index view. Even with the classic view, having a couple of lines of message content in addition to the subject is really useful.

    Hi, I'm also adding my vote to this feature. Cheers!

    Sorry, this will stay “bluesky” at least until after I've re-implemented the message list (which I do plan to do for multiple reasons -- including some bugs). I guess the good news is that the message list is one of very few things which have not yet been re-implemented in the main window.
