Encryption using a Smartcard

In the past I've used MailMate successfully for encrypted communication using certificates in my Keychain. Nowadays things moved to a Smartcard, and Mailmate doesn't seem to find the certificates. Has MailMate ever been tested / used succesfully with Smartcards? The interface for it seems to nowadays this one here: https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment-reference-macos/intro-to...
