Insertion point is placed after signature despite Preferences settings

I have Default Signature Placement set to Bottom and Caret Placement set to Always at Top, yet just now I created a new message, tabbed out of the Subject field, and wound up with the caret below my signature. I tried it a second time and got the same result.

Not happening on my work machine, which is running 5808. I'll try reproducing this at home again this afternoon.
