Feature request: limit downloaded emails by age (to save disk space)
Reported by Itai Ferber | May 4th, 2021 @ 02:14 PM
(Forgive me if this is already possible via a preference or mailbox rule somehow — if so, I couldn't find it.)
I have a good amount of mail stored on the server and MailMate does a great job of fetching it all and making it available to me. But, for the most part, I rarely care about older email — at least, enough to keep it around on disk. It would be great if there were a way to limit the mail that MM persists to disk by age (e.g. older than 3/6/12 months), even if via a hidden setting. I don't mind forgoing having offline access to that mail on certain accounts.
I don't know whether this sort of request would fit with MM's existing architecture, but whether message metadata would need to be kept in an index (but message content is not persisted and is accessible only when an IMAP connection can be established) or whether the message simply wouldn't exist in MM unless an IMAP connection exists, would be completely acceptable to me.
Thanks for your consideration!

A very long time ago MailMate had a feature like this, but it was tricky to implement in a robust way and in the end I decided to drop it.. The currently recommended approach is to put old emails in a separate IMAP mailbox and then unsubscribe that in the IMAP account settings.

Thanks, Benny! I figured that would be the recommendation — I can see if I can set up some server-side rules for that. Appreciate the response!
