I have set up LDAP using the directory utility app and it is now searchable via Contaqcts and available for autocompletion in Apple Mail. It seems like in addition to routing to a hidden preference setting that mailmate could use the LDAP access via the directory utility app.

Of course, it may be that no way to do that exists if you are not Apple, in which case never mind :-)
