Export all MailBoxes and associated folders to one mbox file?
Reported by Michael Daitzman | January 24th, 2020 @ 05:45 PM
With Apple Mail and Mailsteward my workflow has been to regularly have mailsteward gather all mail from apple mail from before a certain date. Sometimes I delete the older mail, sometimes not.
This automatically gets all the mail from all my mailboxes, and all the assorted folders.
In mailmate I have only figured out how to write mbox files on a per mailbox/folder basis - eg. Export to mbox seems to only do a it folder by folder - is there some trick I have not found to just dump all my mail to an mbox, then import it and have mailsteward recognize the various folders associated with each email account?
Thanks!

Hi Benny,
Any update on this? I think it is really two questions:
1. Am I doing something wrong or are the mbox exports folder by folder?
2. If they are folder by folder do you have any recommendation for getting something like the workflow I highlighted in my original note? And probably an additional question:
3. If not, is that workflow available with one of the other products integrated with mailmate like eaglefiler or Devonthink? Thanks!

Sorry about the late response.
If I remember correctly then it's possible to automate integration with MailSteward as follows. Use a rule in MailMate, e.g., on your Inbox or your Archive mailbox to run a command which exports emails to a specific folder (Run Command > Export to Folder). Then configure MailSteward to watch this folder and automatically import (and delete I think?) the emails in the folder.
I hope that helps.

Thanks!
In my initial testing it doesn't have the exact same name for the containing folder, rather it has the name of the directory enclosing the mbox. So, less integrated but it should be doable (a tiny bit more fiddling to confirm.) It looks like eaglefiler is similar - the process is folder by folder and I have to select things(?).
For what it's worth, I put in a feature request with mailsteward to develop a mailmate bundle to emulate what they do with apple mail - any other mailsteward users, please do that too :-).
If you have any sugeestions for tools that will do a full archive of all my mail providers and folders please let me know.
Thanks!
