Hanging, Freezing On Low-Bandwidth Connections

MailMate Friends,
Starting a few months ago, I noticed that MailMate becomes unusable when I am on any kind of low-bandwidth connection, for instance, the plane. The program freezes in response to any action, and even when I take my main account offline, activity viewer shows it as frenetically active. Any idea of how to deal with this? Basically I'm back to webmail :( Thank you, Chris
