Anonymous SMTP
Reported by Peter Bowen | November 25th, 2019 @ 09:08 PM
My SMTP server will only work via anonymous submission. Any attempt at SMTP-level authentication gets rejected (instead it has network ACLs to only allow submission from certain IPs).
I cannot figure out how to configure MailMate to stop attempting to send a username. I tried edition Submission.plist, to change the URL to smtp://smtp.example.com (where smtp.example.com is the right server name), but then Mailmate never tries to send at all.
Is there a way to use Mailmate with a SMTP server that does not allow authentication?

I guess the code might be broken. In theory, a blank username in the settings or a single dash (-) should tell MailMate to not authenticate, but I haven't tested that for a long time. Could you try again just to make sure it doesn't work (before I start debugging)?

Using "-" works. Leaving it blank results in the username from the IMAP server being used for SMTP.

I can confirm this solved the issue for me as well. This isn't documented though, if it was that would have saved me some time...

@Sjoerd: I'll add a comment to the manual, but I've also tried to change default behavior. If the server does not support any authentication methods and a non-standard port is used then it'll continue without authenticating even if a username has been derived from other settings.
(A better solution would make anonymous SMTP available as an explicit setting.)
