Typing lag.

I have recently experienced an increase in typing lag when composing messages. Sometimes typing is interrupted just enough for the spinning beachball to occur (and disappear again), that happens in particular when moving the cursor with my mouse.
Is there a way I can troubleshoot and resolve myself?
