Line Breaks in Markdown

I have a problem using line breaks in Markdown, it appears that there is no way to actually enter a line breaks so

Thank you for your patience
will appear as
Dear x
Thank you for your patience
Am I missing something? I see that this has been reported before, but I still cannot find a solution for it.
