emate not working

I have followed instructions on https://manual.mailmate-app.com/emate
I have verified the symbolic link is in ~/bin/.
However, when I type 'emate --help' I get '-bash: emate: command not found'.
My system: MailMate/5635 MacBookPro11,1/x86_64/4/10.14.6
What's wrong?

If you go to ~/bin in the terminal and do:
./emate
does that work? if not, it's probably not executable.
chmod +x ./emate
