Rules executing extremely slowly

I have a series of rules on my Inboxes that sort mail out to the appropriate folders. It used to be that the rules seemed to execute instantly. I never saw items in my inbox that belonged in other folders. Now, it seems to take significant time. I will see items in my Inbox that I know should be moved, and sometimes, I will see them in the Inbox and the destination folder simultaneously. Any suggestions?
My system: MailMate/5635 iMac16,2/x86_64/8/10.14.5
