Cannot connect to Dovecot IMAP server ("Connection error (unknown reason)"

Hi,
I am trying to set up an IMAP account to a Dovecot server which I am currently using without any problems with Apple Mail.
If I set up the account in MailMate, after a few seconds of
"spinning wheel" the account is marked as "unavailable".
If I try "Edit Subscriptions" a popup appears "Mailbox Retrieval
Failed - Error: "Connection Error (unknown reason)."
I have triple checked that the server settings and the password are correct. I also have verified that a manual login to the server works (see truncated transcript below).
As mentioned, Apple Mail works fine with the same server
settings for this server.
Is there a way to get more meaningful error messages, e. g. the
server communication dialog output?

Note the Activity Viewer menu item in the Window menu. This might help you locate the problem.
If not, then write me again. It certainly should work with a Dovecot server.
If you have a working account then you can also use “Help > Send Feedback” to send me the actual hostname and then I'll try connecting my self (if connecting and not authenticating is the main problem).

No activity is displayed at all.
As requested I sent you the details on the server a few days ago.

Private correspondence has helped determine that connecting works with
openssl
, but not in MailMate. It is currently unclear whether this is a problem with CFNetwork or MailMate. (The issue might only be triggered by an older version of Dovecot.)
