searching for messages sent to an address not returning expected results

I use search extensively - and have recently found (I updated a week? ago?) that I'm not finding messages to a specific email address. And clearly there are more messages to be found. I don't know how else to describe actions without sharing emails I shouldn't - so let me know how to troubleshoot here.
I'm entering a search string like: "t email@address.com" OR "f jules t another_person_name"
If I then go to 'Sent Messages' and sort by the person I'm searching for, there are many more than shown in the query.
