Exchange Calendar, Contacts, Tasks IMAP4 retrieval error

Reported by Steve Holloway | January 16th, 2019 @ 02:32 PM

Hi -

I use Mailmate for my work email, connecting via IMAP to an Office365 mailbox.

It looks like my problem is the same one that was reported (and closed) here: https://freron.lighthouseapp.com/projects/58672/tickets/178-error-w...

I think the problem is confined to the Calendar, Contact and Tasks mailboxes (folders) and it looks like it happens when one of the items in a special exchange folder is changed or deleted. I can't delete the IMAP error messages and they annoyingly hang around in my All Messages mailbox (I've got >4000 of them).

Here's an example:

From: Microsoft Exchange Server
Subject: Retrieval using the IMAP4 protocol failed for the following message: nnnnn

The server couldn't retrieve the following message:

Subject: "Travel home from Sheffield"
From: "Holloway,Steve" ("/O=XXXXXX/OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP (XXXXXXXXX)/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=XXXXXXXXX-HOLLOWAY,ST")
Sent date: 11/13/2018 10:15:10 AM

The message hasn't been deleted. You might be able to view it using either Outlook or Outlook Web App. You can also contact the sender to find out what the message says.

When I open the mailbox in my sources and double click one of the messages, Mailmate crashes.

Any ideas?

Best regards,
Steve

It certainly should not crash! I think I should be able to reproduce that if you send me one using “Help ▸ Send Feedback” (drag an example into the email). If this also crashes then first drag it to the Finder and use the “Compress” menu item. Then send it to me.

The more general problem is that you don't want these emails in MailMate at all. You can fix this using “Edit Subscriptions” in the IMAP account editor.

(I have no idea why Microsoft exposes these files via IMAP, but it's not straightforward to automatically work around it.)

    Hi -

Unsubscribed from the special Exchange folders - problem solved thanks :-)

    Feedback email with sample sent.

When I double click on one of the IMAP errors in the All Messages folder, Mailmate crashes, but when I double click on it in the Sources / Exchange / Calendar folder, it does nothing.

Although, now I've unsubscribed from the folders I don't see the emails to click on to make it crash.

    Best regards,
    Steve
