Order of messages in threads should match mail list sort order
Reported by Mike Conley | October 25th, 2018 @ 04:35 PM
I always keep my mail list sort order as Date Received, most recent at the top. But individual threads (or conversations) show the oldest message at the top when I expand the thread, and preview the oldest message when the thread is collapsed. In both of these cases, the topmost message should be the one displayed, so that it matches the sort order of the list.
In general, it's never the case that I want to reply to the original message; I always want to reply to the most recent one, and that's not possible with the current settings unless I expand the thread and explicitly select the message I want.

This is a side-effect of the strict threading mode in MailMate. It cannot be changed before I've also implemented a different method for threading -- which has been on my todo for a long time.
All I can offer you for now is to update this ticket when/if that is implemented.
Note the thread related shortcuts in the Message menu. Some of them might be useful as a workaround.

Also potentially useful is the auto-expand hidden preference. I'll try using that and see how I like it.
Looking forward to that threading rewrite! :)

+1 for being able to get at the most recent in the thread first (although, the "thread arcs" view just requires a quick click on the last node to get there).

+1 for this one. Because apparently it still is not possible...I started using MailMate yesterday, so I am still discovering how (great) it works! But this seems really odd: the list of messages when a conversation is expanded is ordered very strange and counter-intuitive. I really hope this one will be addressed shortly!

+1. Have been using Mailmate for some time and always found it counter intuitive to have to use my mouse to click through things :) Would be great to see this addressed!

@Eshan: Note the Message > Last of Thread key binding (and also holding down ⌥ when expanding using either keyboard or mouse -- this one is a macOS feature).
In general, the status of this ticket is the same. I do want to improve threading (and related issues), but it's a major task and still not at the top of my list. This ticket will be updated when that changes if anyone wants to be notified (enable “watching” the ticket).
