Message list loses focus when navigating with keyboard shortcuts

After installing the latest update I started experiencing a problem with navigating unread items when using the keyboard.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create an "unread" smart mailbox
  2. Click on it
  3. Press k or space to activate the first item
  4. Press k or space to move to the next item

The list loses focus and I have to click on an item on the list to resume browsing.

I have Gmail keyboard shortcuts enabled but this issue is happening when using the space bar as well.
