Dictionary Problems

Reported by Steve H | November 22nd, 2011 @ 06:37 PM

I've been noticing problems using the iOS-style dictionary pop-ups in Version 1.3.1 (2491). As shown below it's possible to have multiple pop-ups displayed at the same time as they can't be closed. They even stay there if you change to a different message!

This is repeatable here.

MailMate Dictionary

A secondary problem is that with these displayed the app seems probe to crashing when trying to take screenshots with either Grab or Skitch!

I am unable to reproduce this (Lion 10.7.2). Do you do anything special to make these popups stick?

In the crash report you sent I can see that you use some patches such as DefaultFolderX. That one is unlikely to be related to this, but there is also other things like AdobeBIB(?). Could you experiment with a different machine or a different (clean) user account on your current machine?

I don't do anything special to make these stick. I select a word and context click for the meaning and then repeat the sequence. If I do this in Apple Mail it works correctly. In third-party apps I get a mixture of results - Reeder works perfectly and both DEVONthink and BBEdit exhibit the same problems as MailMate.

I'll see if I can dig a bit deeper to see if it related to something else I'm running.

I've raised this as an issue with BBEdit too and they have hard multiple reports of the same thing. Initial feedback was it may be a bug in the OS.

MailMate has no code with relation to the dictionary popovers. They are handled completely by the NSTextView standard Cocoa class. The problem is probably either the OS or some patch running on your machine. Did you try a different machine or a clean account on your current machine?
