NSWindowTab state isn’t preserved between relaunches

Reported by Christopher Corbettis | February 7th, 2018 @ 10:19 AM

I would really like to be able to use macOS’s native NSWindowTabs to keep a few different email views grouped together, but sadly tab setup isn’t preserved between MailMate relaunches.

This is easy to test:

  1. Enable MailMate ▸ View ▸ Show Tab Bar
  2. Click on the new tab button at the far right end of the tab bar.
  3. Modify the new tab in some way, change the layout of the tab, or view a different mailbox.
  4. Quit and relaunch MailMate.
  5. Both windows will reappear, but they are recreated as separate windows.

I noticed the same issue in Version 1.14 (5757).

I tend to keep several tabs open in MailMate at all times. I often use it to "bookmark" where I left off in one mailbox when switching to a different one. Maybe there is a more elegant way to do this in MailMate (which I would be interested in learning), but in the meantime my simple request is to be able to keep the order of these tabs when relaunching the program. This is especially an issue during active development when test builds are released weekly or daily as they currently are.

As this ticket notes, tabs are recreated as separate windows when the program is relaunched. The command "Merge All Windows" mostly solves this problem by putting them back into tabs in a single window, however they seem to be mostly in either a reverse or semi-random order. This requires a bit of manual effort to recall and drag them back into the proper order. Would it be possible for MailMate to remember the tab order prior to quitting the program and either automatically reopen them as tabs or at least retain this order when using Merge All Windows?
