Email autocomplete from Google directory?

I would really love to have the address autocomplete feature work with the Google contacts directory. It looks like it's now based on previous recipients or something, which is good, but means I have to go to another app to find the address for a new person.
I wonder if it would be possible to add that functionality with a plugin?

Old ticket but try this: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane to get the latest test release.
MailMate uses a different approach to access Contacts and this might work now.
