contacts lost

same problem as closed ticket # 1722
I have auto-complete from contacts selected in the preferences pane as well as sent mail, but it is not using my address book to find emails. I move my email off the server annually so using just sent messages is not robust. that said, even people I emailed last week are not robustly showing up in the autofill for To:
I also have had to rebuild my mail twice in the last year, both times it appears to be related to having send-later messages in my drafts queue that I tried to open and edit.
