Fully expand thread not working if thread already partially expanded

When reading a thread, if I open the next message with the right arrow, subsequent attempts to completely expand the entire thread with "option right arrow" don't work. I need to collapse the partially open thread first.

This is an Apple feature and it's how all outlines work on macOS. (I think the custom key binding selector in MailMate,
expandThread:, works differently if you don't mind using a different shortcut.) -
